HOW DID SH*TS N GIGGLES COME TO BE?

In 2022… It happened. Run N Gun, once punk-rock and anti-establishmentarian, has become a giant beast of a mainstream festival. How dare you. How dare you all.

To compliment our massive, mainstream festival we introduced SH*TS N GIGGLES which is now Vancouver’s REAL Run N Gun Competition. 

First off, just because it’s call Sh*ts N Giggles doesn’t mean we only want comedy films, and it definitely doesn’t mean we want (intentionally) bad films. Vancouver has a rich history of putting mediocrity on a pedestal and that’s just not the kind of festival we want to run.  We want you all to make the BEST films you possibly can, in any genre you want, without breaking the piggy bank or spending your life savings to make a movie.

THE RULES OF SH*TS N GIGGLES:

• Films must be completed for UNDER 250 DOLLARS

  • This excludes: Food, Fuel, Insurance, and sound

• ALL EQUIPMENT MUST BE ABLE TO FIT INTO THE BACK OF A TOYOTA PRIUS.  No renting giant gear vans, even if you own a giant gear van, you can’t fill it. We realize this may be hard to measure without having a Toyta Prius but you can figure it out.

• You have ONE YEAR to make a film. That’s right, you can start right after this year’s SNG ends. Pre-writing is encouraged.

• Films must be UNDER 5 MINUTES IN LENGTH, including credits.

• Film must be THEMED AROUND THE YEARLY THEME, SNG 2026 - “Secrets”

• Anything goes: We don’t censor art. We ain’t about that sh*t. We encourage our filmmakers not to punch down, but we also encourage filmmakers to push boundaries. (That being said, legally we cannot play pornography with sexual penetration.)

• In this festival not every film will be played. This is a chance for our team to put on something lower-key than Run N Gun and showcase the top rated films (approx the top 50).

• You cannot publicly play your film before the festival

• The competition is open to all filmmakers living in British Columbia

• Don’t be a cop. Do not contact us accusing another team of cheating. It’s for Shits N Giggles.

Unrepresented Filmmakers: Black, Indigenous, Trans, or disabled filmmakers can email us at sngfestival@gmail.com for waivers.

These groups have, historically, been underrepresented in the past years of Run N Gun and we are committed to reducing and removing barriers of entry. These films must be directed by an underrepresented filmmaker to quality.

IMPORTANT INFO

• Only the TOP FILMS will play the festival. The exact number will be determined closer to the festival, but expect two programmes of short films.

• There will only be four awards: GOLD, SILVER, BRONZE and BEST STUDENT FILM. Remember, we are making these movies for sh*ts n giggles. If you are participating for awards and prestige at a festival called Sh*ts N Giggles, you may be too far gone for this competition.  

• The Screenings & Parties/Mixers for these events will be HUGE & HYPE AS HELL. If you were at Run N Gun this year, you should know we can throw one hell of a party! These events are about showcasing the amazing talent this city has to offer and connecting this film community in ways that are meaningful and affordable.
